“I was doing nothing. I was sitting on the couch eating chips and sleeping every afternoon,” Mr Whitcher said.
The myotonic muscular dystrophy sufferer weighed 85 kilograms, had high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood iron levels, type two diabetes, fatty liver, respiratory problems and chronic back pain.
He was also an insomniac and had depression.
On Monday, Mr Whitcher was a changed man.
He has lost 10 kilograms and has a target weight of 70 kilograms by Christmas Day.
His blood pressure, cholesterol and iron levels are all in the normal range, he no longer has diabetes or suffers from depression or insomnia, doesn’t require any medications and has returned to his favourite hobby of gardening.
Prompted by the death of his brother earlier, Mr Whitcher turned to his other brother Brett, a weight-loss coach, for help.
“I decided I had to make some changes. I was seeing a cardiologist, a GP, neurologist, occupational therapist, psychiatrist and pain management specialist.”
Brett put his brother on the Healthpointe program, which includes one-on-one coaching in nutrition, supplements and exercise.
Initially struggling to walk 1000 steps a day, Mr Whitcher now easily reaches 14,000 to 15,000 daily.
“I’ve improved just about 100 per cent on what I used to be,” he said.
“I now have the energy to spring out of bed feeling energised and look forward to my daily morning walk. I have taken back control of my health and feel the best I ever have.”
Brett added: “He has really changed his whole life. He’s gone from a couch potato to someone who is unstoppable.”
Mr Whitcher was also the special guest at the Lake View Walkers launch on Monday.
The group walks every Tuesday and Thursday at 9.30am, leaving from the Lake View Hotel.
It is also part of the Best ‘O Lake events program, where microchip technology records your time walking or running around Lake Wendouree.
Best ‘O Lake events are held on the first Sunday of every month except November. For more information, visit www.bestolake.com.au
