Four fire crews were called to the blaze at a Learmonth Road property about 4pm.
Two occupants of the house escaped the flames before crews arrived.
Ballarat Police sergeant Travis Barber said the fire was not suspicious.
Wendouree fire brigade lieutenant Rob Hurley said someone had been deep-frying chips when the fire started.
“We believe the fire was caused by someone cooking with oil on the stove,” he said. “We advise people not to leave their cooking unattended.”
Mr Hurley said the fire caused damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the remainder of the property.
Ballarat Police and Powercor were also called to the scene. Powercor isolated the power source at the premises, while police blocked the service road during the incident.
