Mynxee wandered into a boggy swamp near Hillview Road, Brown Hill, last week and reached the point of no return before being saved by the SES.
SES volunteer Damian White, who was part of the eight-person team to rescue the horse, said manpower was not enough to pull Mynxee from the swamp’s grip.
“The mud was so deep it essentially sucked you in the more you moved,” Mr White said. “So after it was established that raw manpower wasn’t going to work, we devised ‘Plan B’ and used a chainsaw to cut a path from the roadway to Mynxee and then drove one of our four-wheel drives at a 90-degree angle to the road and put it off the side of the road.
“We hooked up a winch and numerous slings around Mynxee’s hindquarters and winched her forward while we lifted her legs.”
After three hours, Mynxee was free.
A vet treated the horse for superficial wounds and exhaustion before she returned to the paddock later that night.
