Donovan had a stroke in October and, after being forced to watch his horse win his past two starts at Sydney from home, he may get the chance to see him have a crack at Queensland's biggest race, the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm, in June.

Hawkes Racing won't be asking Our Boy Malachi to take on fellow stable sprint stars Chautauqua and Deep Field at The Championships at Randwick in  autumn.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said it was too early to compare him with his glamour stablemates, despite his thrashing of the field in the Razor Sharp  in his 16th win from 18 starts.

"That's way over the top," Hawkes said. "We're lucky that we've got three crack sprinters and that's why he kept going the way he did.

"Horses like him, Chautauqua and Deep Field, they've all got that will to win and they know how to put it together."

The arrogance of Our Boy Malachi's performance was demonstrated at the 300metres when the in-form Gerald Ryan-trained Dothraki loomed and looked set to make a real race of it.

But as soon as that happened, jockey James McDonald showed off the $1.75 favourite's electric sprint and he put three lengths on Dothraki by the 100metres and won by the same margin easing down.

"I told James to have the last crack and what I said to James was that he actually finds more when he's put under pressure," Hawkes said.

"To give you an idea of how slow they were going, he had his head on the side wanting to go and James was just saying 'hang on let's wait', so it just shows you he's a professional and wants to do it.

"The best part was when James still had a lapful of horse and 200metres and he said, 'bang, let's go', and he was off. He kind of toyed with them in the end."

McDonald was having his first ride on the emerging star and said, despite Our Boy Malachi's reputation, he was given a shock as he treated the field with disdain.

"He's just a real good horse," McDonald said.

"He actually surprised me when we went and, geez, it was easy in the end and it takes a bit to do that."

Hawkes didn't rule out giving Our Boy Malachi the chance to make it four straight wins on Sydney tracks by putting him in the Canterbury Classic in a fortnight, but said it was unlikely.
