Santa made a rare appearance himself, while families and singles alike sang along to traditional carols including Away in a Manger, Silent Night and, of course, Jingle Bells.
The mild weather was enticing, with more than 4000 people attending.
For first-time parents Joel and Mary Froom, it was the chance for their newborn daughter Sarah to experience the sounds of Christmas.
“For us, it’s about getting out, being with friends and being happy,” Mr Froom said.
“It’s such a nice time of the year. Everyone generally has the Christmas spirit and the carols usually bring that spirit out a bit more.”
Formerly the Eureka Carols until it was moved and renamed last year, the Ballarat Carols has been bringing joy to the people of Ballarat for more than 40 years.
Musicians and vocalists are drawn from several local churches.
“The carols are a gift from the churches of Ballarat to the com-
munity of Ballarat. It is a time when the story of Christmas can be celebrated in a fun and uplifting way,” organiser Pamela McKee said.
“The event also allows people to give to those who are less fortunate with a collection for the 3BA Christmas Appeal.”
