For many, Monday brought news of bright futures and interesting careers.
Ballarat Clarendon College dux Tom Harris, 18, had been holidaying in Adelaide when he received a call from one of his teachers on Sunday night, telling him to come back.
And it's lucky he did.
He received a VCE score of 99.50.
Tom, who has been at the school for 15 years having started in three-year-old kindergarten, said years of hard work and dedication had paid off.
"I haven't really slept because I was driving all night but it's a pretty amazing feeling," he said.
"It has been a pretty intense year, with lots of study, but the hard work has paid off."
Tom plans to study science at the University of Melbourne.
As is the case most years, Ballarat Clarendon College excelled in their VCE results with 14 students achieving a score more than 98, while the median was 88.4.
Principal David Shepherd said the results were testament to his students and staff.
"It just goes to show that if you put in the hard work you will do great things," Mr Shepherd said.
"The students should be thrilled with such great results."
