Indigenous origin to city name, not Welsh

CONTRARY to Saturday's letter regarding the Welshness of the name Ballarat, I beg to differ, as the true meaning of the name is,"by the water or resting place".

The name derives from the Aboriginal language as I was taught in the 1950s at primary school. In fact, I think Wither's History of Ballarat may also confirm this.

The Aboriginal people were nomadic, but they still had definite territorial boundaries and this was the case with the Ballaarat tribe.
