The 60-year-old took a leap of faith on Friday when he shaved off a thick moustache he grew in his early 20s.
A City of Ballarat employee for the past 22 years, Mr Thompson shaved the hairy handlebar during a work Christmas party, with colleagues shocked by his new appearance.
"Holy moly, would you have a look at that," one of his workmates said with a laugh.
"That is unbelievable."
Asked what he thought of his new appearance, Mr Thompson said it hadn't improved his looks.
"I'm still bloody ugly," he said in good humour.
"And it's cold... a lot colder."
He decided to make the change a few months ago to raise money for men's health charity, Movember.
On Friday, he'd already raised more than $2200 for the cause.
"That's what it was all about," he said.
"Men's health is a great cause because so many man go through their lives not really thinking about it, but they should.
"If me doing this can make a few blokes think about their health, well that's a great thing."
Asked if he would keep the smooth upper lip, he said time would tell.
"I'll see how I feel about that in a week or so," he said.
