Senator David Leyonhjelm is wrong ("Self-defence is right, so why shouldn't we be prepared to defend ourselves", December 19). Allowing all and sundry the freedom to carry a gun would be utter madness. How soon would self-defence turn into hold-up, robberies, murder.

No, Senator, it is not for our society. With a gun in hand it is too too easy to kill. It is the person holding the weapon who kills. Guns, out of hands, with no ammunition, locked up and unavailable is the only rule needed. Guns are not the answer against evil they only add to it.
If the hostages in the Lindt Cafe incident had had guns there would probably have been more deaths. At least when a hostage reached for a pocket or bag the gunman knew there was nothing to fear from a concealed weapon. No more need be said.
Legitimate use of guns must be very strictly controlled and policed. Every citizen does not need to carry a firearm.
