Police spotted the 37-year-old man from Narre Warren riding a quad bike with his young son on a residential street in Narre Warren about 8.10pm on Sunday.

The man was not wearing a helmet and his quad bike was unregistered, Sergeant Brett Shanton said.

He also allegedly returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.164, more than three times the legal limit.

"We continue to see too many deaths and injuries as a result of bad driving behaviour," Sergeant Shanton said.

"The message is and always has been pretty simple; if you are going to drink or take drugs don't drive. If everyone stays alert, stays sober and stays within the limit then everyone will stay safe and stay alive."

Victoria's road death toll currently stands at 245 - up from 239 at the same time last year.

The man's licence has been suspended. He is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.
