Renowned for their experimentation and creativity surrounding compositions, Tek Tek Ensemble will add a quirky addition to the Summer Sundays series.
Kicking off at 6.45pm on Sunday, the ensemble will perform a vast amount of world music inspired by Mexican Mariachi, Kenyan benga, Indonesian dangdut, Columbian gaita and Ethiopian jazz.
Tek Tek Ensemble double bass and vocalist James Maguire said the group members, who are not new to the idea of performing outside, looked forward to performing at Ballarat’s Botanical Gardens.
“We’ve done a real mix of performances in Australia and around the world over the years.
Recently, in Wagga Wagga, we did the same kind of thing and performed outside in a park and it was really fun,” he said.
Maguire said despite only a small ensemble, each member could play a vast array of instruments, including the trumpet, trombone, violin, percussion, guitars, double bass and piano accordion, that give the group its uniqueness.
“For a six-piece band, it’s like a mini orchestra,” he said.
“The uniqueness is one of the most enjoyable things.
“We’re a really versatile group.
“To have six musicians improvising and interacting with audiences makes it enjoyable to watch.
“We don’t pretend to be a Latin or gypsie band.
“We’re a bunch of Melburnites playing music from different cultures, and we love that our music appeals to a wide range of audiences.”
Brulee will perform a variety of classic French songs by artists including Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, Serge Gainsbourg and Cole Porter.
