Despite the unseasonal morning, Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said minimum January temperatures had been lower in 2014 and 2013.
“Last January on the 5th it was 3.9 degrees, while the lowest January temperature in 2013 was 3.4 degrees,” Ms Westcott said.
“It’s light winds, clear skies and a cooler air mass, and that causes the temperature to plummet.
“There will be a warmer morning tomorrow (Saturday) and over the weekend. The cloud cover will bring a warmer morning but cooler days.
“We will see these daytime temperatures reach comfortable upper 20s on Monday before it reaches the 30s on Wednesday and Thursday.”
For the month, Ms Westcott said the most notable irregularity was rainfall.
“Usually, Ballarat sees 39 millimetres falling over eight days. So far we’ve seen 77 millimetres falling over seven days.”
