The iconic filmmaker Woody Allen is developing a TV series for the Amazon streaming service. The announcement comes hot on the heels of Amazon's flagship drama Transparent winning outstanding comedy series and outstanding lead actor in a comedy series (for Jeffrey Tambor) at the Golden Globes. Amazon has confirmed Allen, an Oscar-winning director, will write and direct a half-hour television series for the service. It will air in 2016, the company said. Amazon has released no other information about casting or production.
Mike Myers brings laughs to HBO
Also signing to a TV network is comedian Mike Myers, who has announced a two-year deal with HBO. Myers, best known for his characters Austin Powers, Shrek and the eponymous Wayne of Wayne's World, revealed the deal will include TV exclusivity for the network. "Mike Myers is one of the great comedy minds of this or any other era," said HBO's head of original programming Michael Lombardo. "The opportunity to collaborate with a talent of his stature is tremendously exciting."
Agent Cooper returns to Twin Peaks
American actor Kyle MacLachlan has confirmed he is returning to one of the defining roles of his career: Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks. Speculation has been rife for some time that MacLachlan would rejoin the series, which is returning in 2016 after 25 years. The 55-year-old star of films such as Blue Velvet and the TV series Desperate Housewives said: "I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks." CBS-owned Showtime commissioned a nine-episode sequel to Twin Peaks from creators David Lynch and Mark Frost. The series will be filmed in 2015 and will air in 2016.
Saul stands alone
Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's new prequel, Better Call Saul, has been chased by one persistent question since it was announced: will Breaking Bad's Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) appear in it? Gilligan and his co-producer Peter Gould have closed the topic – for now – by confirming that neither character will appear in Better Call Saul. "Walt and Jesse will not appear in season one," Gould said during an appearance at a new programming showcase in Los Angeles. "We really want [Better Call Saul] to stand in its own." The series launches soon on Stan.
Robots rest in peace
Production designer Robert Kinoshita, the man who designed three of the most famous robots in the history of pop culture, has died. Kinoshita designed Tobor from the 1954 film Tobor the Great, Robby the Robot from the 1956 film Forbidden Planet and the B-9 Environmental Control Robot from the TV series Lost in Space. Kinoshita was 100. Nicknamed the "bubble-headed boobie" by the nefarious Dr Smith (Jonathan Harris) whose act of sabotage sent the Robinsons off course in the show's pilot, the robot became famous for a number of catchphrases, notably "Warning! Warning!"
Who is on stage
And another of the science fiction world's best-known mechanicals, the Dalek, will be taking to Australian stages this month as part of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular. Local orchestras will be performing music from the series including its iconic opening theme and key moments from the show's 50-year run, right up to the latest (Peter Capaldi) era. Joining the musicians will be Daleks, Cybermen, "other Doctor Who monsters" and the man who played the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.
