Victorian youth development officer Lee Kelly has heaped praise on the facilities at the Ballarat Polocrosse Grounds in Mitchell Park, which has played host to more than 60 players learning their trade under the guidance of specialist coaches since Monday.
Kelly said she ran a successful clinic in Portland two years ago, but was unable to attract enough numbers to host one in 2014.
Then came the move to Ballarat, and with it has come a good cross-section of riders from all over the country.
“The move to Ballarat was (for) the facilities. The facilities are great, the grounds are in sensational condition. All the facilities we need are here,” Kelly said.
“They know coming here that they have got good showers, they have got good yards, they know that it’s safe for the horses, the horses are not going to get hurt and neither are the kids.”
Kelly said the clinic was designed for “grass roots” players and not those at the elite level.
She said the major focus of the week was to “improve the riding and horsemanship which will then improve the polocrosse game” but focused on other areas of the sport.
She said some riders had brought inexperienced horses to help them also learn the game.
“It actually started out as under-21, but I have 12 adults also doing this clinic and learning,” Kelly said.
The clinic runs until Friday and leads into the season-opening tournament in Portland, which starts on Saturday.
