Operation Western P1 was conducted with the TAC to target speeding on the Western Freeway, between Beaufort and Bacchus Marsh.
Ballarat and Moorabool Highway Patrol units checked 602 vehicles between October 1 and December 31, resulting in 542 offences.
There were more than 450 speeding offence infringement notices issued, with seven vehicles being impounded for high speeds.
Ballarat Police Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Pat Cleary said the high number of offences was “surprising”.
“The speed limit is 110km/h out there – and to think people still break the speed limit,” he said.
He said the Western Freeway did not have an above-average trauma rate compared to other Victorian highways.
“The Western Highway has its fair share of trauma and this operation is all about reducing that trauma,” Sergeant Cleary said.
The operation was carried out in addition to standard police operations.
Other recorded offences include seatbelts, mobile phone and signals offences and dangerous driving.
The second half of the operation, Western P2, will start in February and continue to target speeding.
