The council will examine significantly boosting the lake’s business and recreational use, along with its tourism capabilities.
However, the Lake Wendouree Activity Strategy’s charter says it will also seek an “appropriate balance” with surrounding residents and the Ballarat community.
In a report to Wednesday night’s council meeting, the strategy is described as “developing a co-ordinated approach for the various sporting groups and other representative groups across the Lake Wendouree precinct and the Ballarat Botanical Gardens precinct.
“(It will) set the framework to enable all groups to pursue strategic growth opportunities in a co-ordinated manner.”
If approved, the strategy will review public land reservation status to boost further development and business opportunities, develop guidelines for all key user groups to expand existing and new uses, and review the outdated master-plan, particularly looking at extra buildings around the lake and expansion of the existing boat sheds.
Cultural awareness will also be boosted, including working with the Koori Engagement Action Group advisory committee and possible links between the lake and Winter Swamp and the Skipton Rail Trail.
Commercial dining growth – either temporary or permanent – will also be examined, along with road traffic, pedestrian, cycling and parking improvements.
Links will be strengthened with the Friends of the Botanic Gardens Visionary Plan and tourism opportunities pushed.
“The Lake Wendouree Activity Strategy seeks to further reinforce the precinct as the key open space area and events location for Ballarat,” the report said.
If given the go-ahead, the strategy will be finished mid-year and implemented in conjunction with key lake and garden users.
