The former North Ballarat Rebel and Lake Wendouree player was given the role earlier this month after impressing in 72 senior appearances since 2010.
Despite Roughead’s young age, 24, Boyd believes the key- position defender is perfectly suited to become the club’s next leader.
“He’s been thrown into the role very young, but that’s the sort of calibre that he is as a person,” Boyd said.
“It’s fantastic, not only for Roughy, but also for the footy club, and he’s a great support to Murph (newly elevated skipper Robert Murphy).”
While Roughead has been as impressive as usual on the training track this pre-season, Boyd said it had been his achievements in the recent past that led to his appointment.
“It hasn’t been so much about this pre-season, and while it’s been really good, Roughy’s been outstanding over the past couple of years,” he said.
Roughead only played 15 games after injury setbacks in 2014, but missed just one match in 2013 and ran out in the red, white and blue colours 18 times in 2012.
Boyd has been one of the Bulldogs’ strongest leaders in the modern era.
The 32-year-old veteran of 239 games has three Charles Sutton best and fairest medals and two All-Australian inclusions to his credit from a 12-year career that began on the Dogs’ rookie list.
