John Crowley began in the position on January 19 for the 2015 school year, after
Dr Peter Casey retired at the end of 2014.
Mr Crowley acknowledged he had big shoes to fill, but said he won’t bring any roaring changes.
“There will be changes eventually, as it is important to strive to find better ways of doing things in the best interest of educating the students,” he said. “But I think its important to take the time to appreciate the hard work that has been done before you, understand how it has become the school it is today – which I will try and do for the first six months.”
Originally from Churchill, Mr Crowley moved from Marian College in Ararat, where he was principal, and was previously deputy principal at Trinity College in Colac.
Mr Crowley said he was happy to be working once again at an Edmund Rice school.
“I like Edmund Rice’s focus on service through quality education, enabling students to go out into the world and help others in need, and also their inclusivity, where everyone is part of the community and their story is celebrated.”
On Tuesday, Mr Crowley participated in the induction for new staff, learning about the history of the college and getting a tour.
He has moved on campus with his wife, who is a teacher at Loreto College, and daughters.
“I absolutely loved my time at Marian College, but I’m ready for a new challenge,” he said.
Mr Crowley has a teaching background in music education, drama, religious education and humanities, over his 23 years of working in schools.
During his time at Marian College, the school population grew from 450 to 600 students, and a multi-purpose gym and trade training centre were added to the college facilities. Mr Crowley and his family moved to Ballarat in 2011 and he has been commuting to Ararat since.
