Legacy Week launched in Ballarat

THE Legacy flag flying over Queen Victoria Square is a call to Ballarat residents to raise funds for the families of our deceased veterans, City of Ballarat councillor Judy Verlin has said.

“The assistance that Legacy gives to so many widows and children should not be underestimated,” Cr Verlin said.

Speaking at the opening of the 2012 Legacy Week appeal, Cr Verlin said the city was proud to fly the Legacy flag for the duration of the charity drive.

Legacy Week runs until September 8.

Sovereign Hill chief executive Jeremy Johnson, who is the Legacy Week ambassador, said his family had benefited from the work of the organisation after his grandfather was killed in World War II.

“My grandfather died aged 39 and he had eight children,” Mr Johnson said.

“Without the help of Legacy, who knows what would have become of the family.”
