Breeders from around the country converged on Morshead Park for the championship show, held in conjunction with a specialist German shepherd show.
Ballarat Dog Club vice-president Sue Schols said she loved dog shows because she loved dogs.
“I don’t show any more, but I like to give back to the show community. I breed Australian cattle dogs,” Ms Schols said.
Club member Dot Harrison said about 640 dogs competed over the day.
She said lots of Shetland sheep dogs and border collies were among the popular breeds.
There were 92 German shepherd entrants from across Victoria and interstate for one of six Victorian specialist shows for the year.
German Shepherd Club of Victoria president Vince Ebejer said because the German shepherd was a herding dog, traits like the easy trot were important to assess.
“Last year, we had to cancel because of the extreme heat, so it’s good to have some nice weather,” Mr Ebejer said.
Show manager Andrew Jones said it was the first show for the year, with the breed in a good place.
“Our overall goal is to keep improving the breed. Judges look for good conformation and a solid character,” Mr Jones said.
The show was a lead-up to the national German shepherd competition in May, which will be hosted in Melbourne this year.
