A MAN whose car burst into flames on Tuesday morning was able to save the most important thing before the vehicle was totally destroyed – his golf clubs.

Driving out from the Howitt Street shopping centre in Wendouree, the man heard a noise and then a fire coming from the engine, according to Ballarat City CFA Senior Station Officer Shane Phillips.
“He was driving, then heard the noise and then saw the flames and smoke,” he said. “He (then) removed himself from the car.”
Mr Phillips said the man was not hurt, and the fire was not considered to be suspicious.
“The cause was a mechanical fault, and there wasn’t any threat to any structures,” Mr Phillips said.
Witness Alistair King said the incident made a dramatic break from work.
“I heard bit of a bang, thought it might have been someone in the shed out the back,” he said.
“So I went out there and saw all the smoke ... (the man) had pulled out his golf clubs, stuff from the car, and was just standing there.”
Mr King, a baker at Baker’s Delight Wendouree, said the CFA quickly dealt with the fire.
“It was put out really quickly,” he said.
