Ever the front runners in fast fashion and on-trend stye international raiders Zara have launched their first "fashion for the home" range in a bid to steal further business away from Australia's retail behemoths.

Throwing open its doors to the public for the first time on Thursday, shoppers streamed through the Highpoint concept store in Maribyrnong and pawed their way through artfully placed throw rugs, ornaments, manchester and so, so many cushions (told you).

There will be two full collections presented each year, with new deliveries arriving in store every week.

The full range includes bedding, table and bath linens, decorative furniture, tableware, cutlery, ornamental items, as well as a loungewear and a bath and body line.

In terms of rugs, bedding and soft furnishings, the palette was as diverse as the different ranges of product: shades of blue, navy, turquoise and sky competed against sunny yellow, hot pink and the evergreen cream.

The store itself is pure Zara - spanish in theme, detail oriented and understated luxe.

The avante-garde entry way marries with walls dressed in neutral colours, accents of chestnut wood furnishings and marble floors with an antique mother-of-pearl effect.

Staying true to the Zara ethos, the price point is exactly where the keen shopper would expect to find it - more than Target or K-Mart, but vastly less than David Jones, Myer, Bed Bath and Beyond and so on.

It's the first homewares store by the Spanish group Inditex – the owner of the Zara label – in Australia, but more are planned.

There are suggestions the Macquarie Centre in Sydney will be considered for its first NSW site.

Zara, which is the biggest fast-fashion retailer in the world, has offered homewares in other countries, as does its rival and second-biggest global retailer, Swedish H&M.

Zara Home joins Victoria's first Dior Perfume & Beauty Boutique, which opened last December at Highpoint, and United States-based health club Crunch Fitness, which will open its first business in Victoria at the centre next month.

Highpoint Property Group managing director Terry Christofides said the Highpoint catchment area was in one of the fastest-growing economic regions in Australia.

Mr Christofides said the $300 million redevelopment of Highpoint enabled the centre to introduce the first David Jones to Melbourne's west and Highpoint was the only shopping centre in Australia with both Zara and Topshop under one roof.

Highpoint is owned jointly by the GPT Wholesale Shopping Centre Fund, the GPT Group and the Highpoint Property Group.
