Jason Johnson, of Pakenham, also seriously injured a male front-seat passenger when he lost control of his car and smashed at night head on into a tree on an unlit, narrow dirt road.

Melbourne's County Court heard that when interviewed by police Johnson, who repeatedly said at the scene "I'm sorry", told them he had since lost his car, his job and "everything" from the incident.

"So now it's just me and jail, by the look of it," he said.

On Wednesday Judge Paul Grant told Johnson, 34, who earlier pleaded guilty to three charges of negligently causing serious injury, his conduct had caused life-changing injuries to the female passengers.

Judge Grant said the circumstances were a serious example of the offence and that general deterrence, just punishment and denunciation were the paramount sentencing considerations.

He jailed Johnson, who has mostly low-level drug prior convictions and none for serious offences or bad driving, for four years with a minimum of two years.

The injuries to one woman, aged 18, included fractured vertebrae and ribs, a perforated bowel, damage to her renal artery and a kidney, which she lost, and scarring.

The other woman's injuries included fractures to two vertebrae and seven ribs and a lacerated liver. The 20-year-old spoke in a victim impact statement of how her life had been severely affected by the crime.

The male passenger sustained a fractured upper right arm but no ongoing disability, while Johnson broke a thumb and fractured a knee cap.

Prosecutor Amina Bhai had told the court the crash happened about 7.30pm on July 30, 2013, after the four had left Pakenham when without warning Johnson performed 360 degree burnouts and deliberate fishtailing.

Ms Bhai said the women yelled for him stop before he lost control and hit the tree.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Grant said it was not alleged that marijuana detected in Johnson's system contributed to his negligence, and noted he had also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with a prescribed concentration of the drug in his blood.

Judge Grant accepted that Johnson, of Pakenham, had taken full responsibility for the incident, which had involved driving "in a grossly negligent manner".

He took into account Johnson's background of "deprivation, abuse and disadvantage", accepted his remorse was genuine and that he had reasonably good prospects of rehabilitation.

Johnson was also fined $500 on the drug-driving charge and had his licence cancelled for four years.
