Plagued by back-related hamstring injuries, Clarke has opted out of Twenty20 cricket in the past to concentrate on the longer forms of the game, including a decision to retire from the Australian international side in 2010.

He hasn't played a T20 game since 2012, when he was a batsman for the Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League.

Speaking on Triple M on Tuesday morning, McGuire said he had spoken with the Test and one-day international captain about the possibility he could join the Stars.

"We'll have further discussions once the World Cup is out of the way. That's exactly where it is at the moment," he said on Triple M.

After signing with Sydney Thunder in 2012, Clarke did not play a match in the Big Bash due to international commitments. Thunder boss Nick Cummins admitted last year that the club's decision to sign Clarke was a mistake.

Despite imposing Test and ODI records, Clarke's history in T20 cricket is modest, averaging 21.05 with the bat at a strike rate of 108.22, including one half century.

McGuire said Clarke had not played T20 cricket to keep his body fit for longer forms of cricket, opening the possibility he may be considering retiring from ODIs.

"I'm hopeful. He hasn't played Twenty20 Big Bash at all, he pushed that aside so he could concentrate on one-day internationals and his Test career," he said.

"He's never played in the IPL for that reason, because he wanted to keep his body as good as it possibly could be."

McGuire said Clarke was the "biggest star in Australian cricket" and would be a strong addition to the side alongside English power hitter Kevin Pietersen.

"So let's see what happens after the World Cup. And if he does, I think he would be a very appropriate person to be at the Stars," he said.
