Laycock proved to be the most consistent golfer at the Midlands Golf Club and Ballarat Golf Club pro-ams at the weekend.
The 43-year-old started with a two-under par round of 70 at Midlands and backed the performance up with a four-under round of 68 in tricky conditions at Ballarat on Sunday.
Laycock says he has been in strong form and hopes the win can propel him back to the high standards he reached more than a decade ago, which saw him qualify for the Open Championship (in 2002 and 2007) and the 2002 PGA Championship.
“I’ve been playing well for the past month,” he said.
“The putter has been a bit unfriendly, but it was nice to hole a few putts today. I hit a couple of really close shots.”
Laycock, who turned professional in 1994, has victories on the Asian and Japanese tours to go with his win at the Canadian-hosted 2001 Victoria Open.
He is now targeting the Traralgon Golf Club pro-am, a “happy hunting ground” that has seen him secure wins in three of the past five editions, before competing in China in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Melbourne-based Commonwealth Golf Club professional John Wade took home a cheque for $1793.40 after taking overall honours at Ballarat.
Wade overcame a shaky start to card a five-under round of 67.
He made up for a shaky start that included an early bogey to reach the turn -4,
before closing strongly with two birdies in the final three holes.
Wade said the win had done wonders for his confidence, with the result coming just 10 days after a round of 82.
“It’s about getting a bit of confidence and form,” he said.
“I’ve really played terrible (this year) and had big scores, which isn’t like me.
“I tried to not do anything stupid coming in, because I felt like five-under was about the number.”
Luke Hickman took out the Midlands pro-am on Saturday with a round of 67.
