It’s part of an ancient concept known as hot rock cooking and the new Taurus Restaurant’s owner, Heidi Germon, thinks Ballarat is going to love it.
Ms Germon has been renovating the Sturt Street premises with sons David and Jason since August and thinks the concept of giving diners full control over their meal was the new dining experience Ballarat needed.
“Ballarat has two great steak houses, but nothing like this,” she said.
“The customer gets to cook their own steak, fish or chicken.
“It’s a fun way to cook meat your own way.”
The Germons previously owned another hot rock restaurant in Gippsland and know how popular the hot rock concept can be.
As part of the hot rocks concept, diners are served their meat on a granite slate which has been heated for up to 6-8 hours in a specialised oven.
It is then up to the diner to decide how well they would like their steak cooked.
"The steaks are more juicier because the granite rocks slow cook the meat," Jason Germon said.
