The 18-year-old is studying a certificate three in engineering for mechanical trade.
He was one of 30 recipients at the presentation evening to recognise excellence in FedUni’s TAFE programs. Recipients were nominated and approved for the awards by their schools.
“I really like the hands-on type of work,” Mr Marquand said.
He finished school last year at Mercy Regional College in Camperdown and studied the vocation at school.
“I don’t feel any different for receiving the award – I know I’m reasonably good, but I don’t like to boast about it. I just work at my own pace.
“I suppose the next thing will be certificate four. It would be great to work in the Air Force one day.”
After winning the national World Skills in Perth last September, Mr Marquand has been concentrating on preparing for the international meet.
Trade engineering teacher Simon Krezlick said when it came to Kelvin, he didn’t have to teach but just give a little guidance.
“He just gets it and goes with it. He has a great natural ability,” he said.
Christopher Gulvin, studying a certificate three in electrotechnology, was named apprentice of the year, while Eric Greenwood was named trainee of the year, studying a certificate three in agriculture.
FedUni vocational education and training executive director Barry Wright said the university was delighted to present the awards.
