Ms Broadway created a quilt to meet the topic “true blue” for the AQC 2015 Challenge. She based the quilt on a photo taken by her husband at Currumbin Alley, calling the quilt Girt By Sea.
“The surfers converge with nature and represent the freedom we feel – the city skyline unites the blue hues of the early morning sky with the dark blue hues of the deep ocean and its glistening waves,” Ms Broadway said. “What a truly wonderful way to start the new day.”
Ms Broadway, a dance and textiles teacher at Mt Clear College, only began quilting a few years ago but has always been artistically minded.
“There’s a real resurgence in a creative fabric arts. I would have started quilting in 2010 – we were away in our caravan and my husband was taking photos, so I made a couple of quilts to recognise my daughters’ achievements of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and running a marathon,” she said.
She entered the com-
petition for the first time in 2012, and has been accepted each year to the competitive line-up.
“I like the challenge of having a topic, and working to achieve it while being creative and telling a story. I don’t do traditional quilts – more artistic quilts,” she said.
Ms Broadway said she feels like she improves each time, with a few family members fighting over who will keep Girt by Sea when it returns home in December.
