Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart said he chose to focus on emptiness because it was a way of life for "far too many people".

"Walk the streets of Melbourne and one still sees the tragedy of the people who live on our streets and in the shadows of our affluence," he said.

He urged followers to be mindful of emptiness around them, even in the internet age, where communication seems easy.

"Emptiness so often just simply shows itself in loneliness and in the absence of meaningful relationships for the people we mix with," he said.

The Victorian and Tasmanian Moderator of the Uniting Church, Dan Wootton, used his Easter message to urge followers to focus their gaze on something they might usually only glance at, suggesting the plight of asylum seekers.

"If domestic politics is your thing, you might like to focus on the new Federal Migration Amendment Bill, the one drawn up to 'maintain the good order of Immigration Detention Facilities'," he said. "Or perhaps the threatened closure of 150 Aboriginal communities in Western Australia."

Anglican Church Archbishop Philip Freier said the tragedies of the past year, much of them driven by violence, offended Jesus' promise of peace.

"Yet we know that violence fills our world, whether it is in the home, on our streets, or in the many tragedies and inhumanities that fill our television screens," he said. "The sufferings of the present world can be deeply intense, and we do not try to minimise that, but we contrast them with the hope we have in Christ."

Wesley Mission chief executive, Reverend Keith Garner, also looked at the theme of violence.

"Sadly we live in a world where the death of the innocent does occur," he said. "The disciples' anguish at the loss of Jesus, their friend, was, no doubt, great and accompanied by shock. Yet we know that this anguish would turn into joy and wonder, and we see the tremendous hope the disciples knew when they realised that Christ had not only died but had also been raised, for them."

Greek Orthodox Archbishop Stylianos Harkianakis said his Easter recommendation was to "greet and accept life, not as we know it in its biological dimensions, but rather as Christ has transformed it through the trial of the tomb and death." Orthodox Easter is on Sunday, April 12.

Australian Christian Churches national president Wayne Alcorn said the Sunday morning resurrection of Jesus was a "game changer" for Christians.

"Because Jesus is alive I have hope for the future, regardless of what comes my way," he said.
