BALLARAT police will guarantee the safety of a man they have already shot at, if he hands himself in peacefully.
Police say it’s in the best interests of Kyle Green, 25, to turn himself in after they opened fire on him in East Ballarat on Friday afternoon.
Green, who was not injured, fled in his car and a massive manhunt was launched.
Ballarat Police Inspector Bruce Thomas said yesterday police were “determined to apprehend him”.
“We believe he is dangerous (and) we want to apprehend him before either himself, a member of the community or a member of the police force gets hurt,” he said.
“We guarantee his safety if he walks into a police station – we’re not going to be waiting for him with guns drawn or anything.”
Inspector Thomas said police were going public with Green’s name and image in the hope the community could help bring about an arrest.
“Somebody out there will know where he is,” he said.
Handling the case, Detective Sergeant Craig Dooley said police were concerned about the public’s safety.
“I think it’s in everyone’s best interests if he gives himself up, or at least makes contact with us.”
Shortly after a police officer fired at Green, his car was found dumped down a dirt track in the Mt Clear area.
Two other males were arrested at the scene, but Green remained on the run.
Green was known to police before the incident and was already wanted for drug and burglary offences.
Dozens of police members scoured different areas of Ballarat looking for the man on Friday evening.
Police searched the area near Castlemaine Gold, as well as in Mt Pleasant and Ballarat East.
A warrant has been issues for Green’s arrest.
