In what could be his last performance on Australian soil, Smyth announced his largest tour of Australia, adding Ballarat to his touring list for this coming Sunday.
Not knowing when, or even if he will return to Australia, Smyth said he is looking forward to performing again at Karova Lounge.
Speaking about his recent album EXITS in an interview ahead of his performance in Ballarat, Smyth said the story behind the album was about the exits taken by the individual everyday.
"There are many exits we take, think of the many you make each day," Smyth said.
"No matter what building you go into, there is an exit.
"It's a maze of your own brain."
He said the songs on the new album touched on different elements from distortion to the a lesser delicate and soft feel.
"I pushed into those elements as far as I could.
"Life isn't as cherry as a pop song, but it's not as dark as Marilyn Manson."
Describing his albums, including EXITS, as chapters in a book, Smyth said his aim was to make them appear as though they intertwine with each other.
"The last album was more about letting go, where as this was about finding the exits - you can't do one without the other," he said.
Following his national tour which wraps up in May, Smyth will make his way to Europe for an indefinite period.
But there are no promises on when he will return to Australia.
"I'm not sure when I'll be back, there is so much coming up I can't see a week ahead," he said.
"There will be a new record though.
"Going to Europe means I can breath in a breadth of fresh air, they have a strong culture of music there that I haven't found elsewhere.
"When I come back from Europe I always feel more alive."
