A POIGNANT tribute marking the centenary of Gallipoli and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II will be unveiled at the Art Gallery of Ballarat this weekend.

The exhibition, Australians at War 1914-1945, explores Australia’s involvement in international conflicts of the 20th century.
Gallery director Gordon Morrison said a key theme throughout the display was the evolution of the Australian “digger” as an iconic representation of the Australian male.
Mr Morrison said almost all of the more than 50 pieces of artwork on display had been sourced from the gallery’s own extensive collection.
Pieces include political cartoons, copies of wartime magazines, original war drawings and sculptures.
Mr Morrison said the pieces brought to life the experiences and stories of soldiers during both world wars.
“The exhibition will range from the dark side of humanity to glimpses of compassion, camaraderie and humour,” Mr Morrison said.
He said the exhibition also touched on the arrival of American troops in Australia during World War II.
The exhibition will also showcase Australian artist Dora Meeson’s renowned painting Leaving for the Front.
City of Ballarat councillor and galley board chairman Vicki Coltman said the exhibition was an opportunity for people to “stop and reflect”.
The gallery’s volunteer guides will host special tours of the display every Saturday and Sunday at 11.30am until the exhibition ends.
