Charles Stanley Johnston, 19, appeared briefly in Ballarat Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to reappear on July 16 for a committal mention hearing.
Johnston, accused of using a 30cm carving knife to rob the BWS bottle shop in Sturt Street of $250 cash last Monday, told the court he didn't know what he'd been charged with, adding he hadn't been allowed any phone calls while in the Ballarat police station cells.
"I really don't want to be here, I want to be in an actual like prison," he told magistrate Michelle Hodgson.
"I haven't even been able to call my dad... I just want to speak to my dad... Because at this police station they're not letting me call my parents.
"I just want to go to like a real prison."
Ms Hodgson said she understood there was a number of custody management issue for Johnston, including the fact he may be withdrawing from a drug of dependence.
Again speaking from the dock, Johnston said he also wanted to be seen by a psychiatric nurse.
Johnston was remanded in custody and will reappear on July 16.
