On Tuesday, the school posted a statement on Facebook announcing Mr Higgs’ retirement after 21 years with Grammar.
Since joining the school as headmaster in the early 1990s, Mr Higgs has helped double the number of enrolments, established new campuses in Melbourne and Mount Rowan, and introduced a program that gives students access to exchange programs with 150 schools across the world.
As the school prepares to farewell its headmaster, Mr Higgs said it would be him who missed the school more.
“It has been marvellous; I will miss the young people most and their smiles and energy – they were all so good-willed,” he said. “That’s a level of energy I will have to try to replace.”
Mr Higgs and his wife plan to move to their farm in She Oaks next year, but Mr Higgs has promised to stay in contact with the school for years to come.
Past and present students took to social media to share fond memories of Mr Higgs during their time at the school.
“Has there ever been a more universally liked, admired and respected headmaster, anywhere?” Tracy Hynam asked.
“Mr and Mrs Higgs, you will both most definitely be missed by all within our school community. Thank you for all that you have done over so many years.”
Mr Higgs will remain at the school until December, before a new headmaster takes over.
The school is currently seeking expressions of interest for its new headmaster for 2016.
