Towners coach Justin Abrams told The Courier scans had confirmed McGettigan had hurt his medial ligament and would miss eight weeks of football.
“It’s better than the alternative in terms of an ACL, where we do lose him for the entire season,” Abrams said.
“Obviously in that eight weeks we have got interleague in there and a split round or a bye, so hopefully he only misses six actual games.”
McGettigan sustained the injury early in his debut for the Towners in the round one clash against Springbank.
He joins a list of injured key players at Dunnstown, which includes assistant coach Scott Henning, who hasn’t played a game since also hurting a medial ligament during the pre-season.
Abrams said Henning was a chance to return on Sunday for the clash against Skipton.
Tall Aaron Brennan is expected to miss at least a week with a calf strain, while Geoff Taylor Medallist Jaye Cahir is struggling with a similar injury.
Also among the list is midfielder Daniel Harbour, who will have surgery to repair a broken nose sustained on the weekend against Newlyn.
