Here we are with a public holiday that nobody asked for; a thought bubble of one man that will have a devastating effect on both our economy and a great Melbourne tradition.
The move out of the Melbourne CBD is a result of this ill thought-out plan for a public holiday that will result in the CBD being a ghost town, rather than the normal hive of activity the day before the grand final.
The impact on our economy of this nonsensical holiday will be disastrous. VECCI has calculated that this additional public holiday will cost Victoria businesses $543 million.
Victorians living in the regions have been left scratching their heads asking themselves "why are we having a public holiday the day before the grand final?"
Why would a parade in Melbourne require a public holiday anywhere? And what connection does this hare-brained holiday have with regional and rural Victoria?
Daniel Andrew's decision to create this public holiday from thin air once again demonstrates that populist headline grabbing trumps good public policy with this Labor government.
