Well, it can be guaranteed there is at least one winner of the Ballarat Football League’s highest individual award who might be dashing home and frantically searching the pool room.
A Henderson Medal turned up at the Salvation Army Ballarat Community Church op shop on Main Road during the week. Its ownership remains a mystery.
There is nothing engraved on the medal and although recent winners have had the medal engraved, it is not known exactly when that tradition started.
Op shop manager Anne Hardy discovered the medal in a donated jacket.
“I had an idea it was some sort of football medal, but I wasn’t exactly sure what the Henderson Medal was,” she said.
A phone call to her husband Ian quickly changed that.
“Ian used to be a football umpire, so he knew exactly what it was,” Mrs Hardy said.
“Sometimes you find jewellery or money or something, but we’ve never had one of these.”
The prestigious Henderson Medal was first awarded in 1954, replacing the former Ballarat Football League Gold Medal. There have been 58 winners of the medal over the years, but our favourite for who it could belong to?
We’re not implying Jarrod Edwards does not look after his collection, but with four of them to his name, there is every chance one could have somehow strayed from the herd.
Anybody who feels they might have lost their medal is encouraged to call BFL operations manager Aaron Nunn on 5333 1977.
