Ten year 9 Chinese language students will leave on Sunday for a six-week trip to study alongside students from their Asian sister schools, in different cities across China.
The school has strong ties to Asia as it is home to the first Confucius Classroom in Australia, supported by the Chinese government to promote Chinese language and culture in other countries.
The trip will be led by the school’s leading language specialist, Jingjing Zhang, and Chinese national teacher Xue Lei who is taking students on a tour of her hometown, Tianjin.
Ms Zhang said the students would touch down in Beijing where they would explore and undertake cultural activities in the country’s capital city.
They will also travel north to Tianjin for two weeks where they will stay with host families and study the Chinese language with other students before stopping at other cities across the country.
Ms Zhang said students were excited to put their second language into practice and experience Chinese culture firsthand.
“They are all looking forward to immersing themselves into the Chinese language, food and music,” Ms Zhang said.
“For a lot of them, it will be their first time overseas and we have mixed the trip up so they will be staying with host families and also in student accommodation so they get a taste for the whole experience.”
Ms Zhang said the trip would also be a chance for the students to reconnect with friends they had made through the school’s Chinese exchange program.
The students will return at the beginning of June.
