Metro train services are equipped with CCTV cameras as an extra security measure for passengers, but V/Line carriages do not have the same equipment.
Public Transport Users Association regional spokesperson Paul Westcott said the installation of cameras wasn’t the number one priority for regional commuters.
“V/Line travellers tend to feel a bit safer – or a bit reassured – by the fact there is a conductor on board and normally they are around and accessible,” he said.
“I don’t think there would be any opposition – people would feel that if they were there, they would be beneficial. But it isn’t the same as Metro trains.”
The trial is looking into issues associated with the implementation of cameras, including data downloading, storage and access requirements, and the IT systems required to support CCTV.
It is believed to have been started under the previous Coalition state government.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the trial was still under way.
“V/Line trains have conductors, which are not only there to help customers but also to keep them safe,” she said.
“Most V/Line stations have CCTV and investigation into CCTV on regional services is still being carried out.”
Mr Westcott said regional train commuters had other priorities, and for Ballarat travellers the most important one was improving the train line.
Due to the single-track nature of the line, Ballarat trains are more prone to stopping along the journey to let other services past.
A passing loop set to be constructed at Rowsley this year is one of the potential solutions to the problem.
“We would prefer to fix the problems with the line in Ballarat – it is that it’s a single track,” Mr Westcott said.
“I think for passengers that would be priority number one and has been for quite some time.”
