However, this year’s newcomers have started with a bang, winning two out of the first three games in division one.
The Vikings’ form continued on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over a vastly improved Forest Rangers outfit.
Kuanyjal Tuani and Jason Hekkema scored shortly before and after half-time to give the home side the win in a see-sawing encounter.
Team manager Rod Oppenhuis said the club had approached the season with no expectations and had been pleasantly surprised with the side’s form.
“It’s been a concerted effort from the committee to get the seniors and reserves going again this year,” he said. “We didn’t really have any expectations. The last time we (were in BDSA division one) we weren’t competitive and we eventually dropped off.
“We have zero goals, but whatever ends up happening, we want to make sure that we remain competitive.”
In Sunday’s matches, Warrnambool belted North United 5-0, while Vic Park stunned Ballarat 4-2 in the biggest upset of the season.
In women’s division one, Warrnambool retained its place on top of the ladder with a hard-fought 2-3 win over Forest Rangers, while North United White beat North United Black 7-3.
