Lacey Underall took out an Adelaide Cup. So Gorgeous claimed a Morphettville Guineas and Listed Quezette Stakes. Now, the Ballarat trainer, who spent time in South Australia early in his career, is hoping to add the $400,000 Australasian Oaks, 2000m, on Saturday to his resume.
Lightly raced Bahamas goes around in the group 1 classic for three-year-old fillies at Morphettville on Saturday. And while her only win was in a Werribee maiden, Bahamas’ past two outings convinced O’Sullivan to step up in Adelaide.
She finished second to the Robert Smerdon-trained and highly rated Fontein Ruby in the listed Alexandra Stakes, 1600m, at Moonee Valley and then third to Kansas Sunflower over the same distance at Flemington.
Damien Oliver will take the ride on Bahamas, who has drawn well in gate three.
She jumped out on the immediate outside of Fontein Ruby, who is chasing a third-consecutive win after saluting in the $250,000 Vobis Gold Reef Stakes at Caulfield – a win that took her past $1 million in stakes.
Smerdon also saddles up last-start Bendigo winner Ungrateful Ellen in the Oaks.
Meanwhile, Platelet has drawn one in the weight-for-age feature for fillies and mares at Morphettville, the group 1 William Hill Classic, 1200m.
Platelet, who is in her last preparation before being retired, won this race two years ago. She is looking to bounce back after finishing sixth in the Irwin Stakes at Morphettville. Platelet has an outstanding record on the track.
Weir also has Scarlet Billows in the William Hill, while Smerdon has Politeness engaged.
