Sustainable House Day: six Ballarat homes open

GREEN houses will be open to the public this Sunday for Sustainable House Day in Ballarat.

One of the six houses belongs to Scotchmans Lead’s John and Pam McKean, It was built in 2009, after Mr McKean worked in co-operation with an architect ensure its sustainability.

But the McKeans are modest about their creation.

“Sustainability is a big word, we use some of our own energy and some embedded energy,” Mr McKean said. “We treat our own waste water which ends up back in the garden even cleaner than when we started with it.”

Smart Living Centre coordinator Jenny Schmidt said some very intriguing homes were open this year, including the first listed nine-star home in Victoria,

The Smart Living Ballarat Centre will be open on Sunday from 9.30 to 3 pm, offering advice on sustainable living and a map of the open house locations.
