Bradley Wilkinson, 33, on Wednesday appeared in a wheelchair in the dock of Ballarat Magistrates Court, where his application for bail was refused.
A barrister told the court Wilkinson’s detention was no longer justified because of his ailing back, but conceded it hadn’t been determined what exactly Wilkinson was alleged to have injured.
The barrister said Wilkinson needed immediate help from his general practitioner and said he hadn’t been receiving adequate pain relief at the Melbourne Remand Centre.
“Mr Wilkinson is obviously up against it here,” the barrister told magistrate Peter Mithen.
Wilkinson was remanded in March after a warrant was issued for his arrest after he allegedly failed to attend court.
He is charged with offences mainly concerning several alleged burglaries of commercial businesses around Ballarat.
His barrister said Wilkinson was in “extreme pain” after falling from his bed and said he had been instructed that a doctor at the remand centre allegedly told Wilkinson it would be “a long time” before he received adequate medical attention.
Magistrate Peter Mithen refused Wilkinson’s application, saying he had not “shown cause” as to why he could be released.
Mr Mithen said Wilkinson’s prior criminal history dated back to when he was 19, adding he had failed to comply with court orders in the past.
Wilkinson was remanded to reappear in Ballarat Magistrates Court on May 21.
