Set to take up stud duties at Sweetenham Stud in the spring, Trust In A Gust has not raced since a first-up close second to Red Bomber at Caulfield on April 18.
His trainer, Darren Weir, is keen to have Trust In A Gust finish on a high to give his stud career some momentum.
Weir said the five-year-old’s condition just gave out at Caulfield, when he was a little behind in his preparation.
Trust In A Gust will certainly strip much fitter for this assignment, for which he has drawn ideally in gate three.
Trust In A Gust has raced just the 18 times for 10 wins, including two group 1s, and $1.1 million in stakes. He is nominated for the Doomben 10,000, 1350m, at Doomben on May 23 and Stradbroke Handicap, 1350m, on June 6. Weir will also saddle up last-start Ballarat winner Rather Heroic in the listed $100,000 Princess Stakes for 3yo fillies, 2000m, at Doomben on Saturday.
ROBERT Smerdon will be hoping he can carry his run of luck from the Warrnambool May Carnival on to Adelaide on Saturday.
Smerdon has the improved Crimson Cape engaged in the group 1 $500,000 South Australian Derby, 2500m, at Morphettville. Crimson Cape takes back-to-back wins at Geelong and Ballarat into the derby.
Smerdon’s Caulfield/Ballarat stable did not have things go his way in Adelaide at the weekend. He saddled up favourites in the Queen Adelaide Sakes (Thurlow) and Australasian Oaks (Fontein Ruby), but Thurlow’s second was the best of the two.
