We'd love to tell you what was said, but will respect the rule of Chatham House.

What we will note is just how fast one can go from chocolates to boiled lollies in the business world. Or, more specifically, plush carpet to sticky carpet.

Back in March, the Woolworths leadership team flew into Melbourne for similar drinks with business scribes. On that occasion the venue was the Credit Suisse office at 101 Collins Street – better known as the "citadel", and home to some of Melbourne's most expensive commercial real estate.

Let's just say the private room at Young and Jacksons is a little less salubrious.

We can only assume the spin doctors decided that, after axing staff, being seen at a pub was a better look than mingling with the princes of Collins Street.

And at least the money stayed in house. Woolworths owns 75 per cent of ALH Group, the owner of Young and Jacksons.

PAINTED LOVE

If Woolworths is looking for extra cash, it's a pity they can't flog the painting upstairs at Young and Jacksons.

As revealed today, Chloe is worth a cool $5 million. The painting, however, must remain with the pub. The reason has to do with a previous owner of the famous Melbourne hotel, one Alan Bond.

Bond Corporation bought Young and Jacksons in 1986, and in 1987 Chloe was relocated upstairs from the public bar, and out of sight. There was soon a public outcry, as Melburnians feared that art-loving Bondy planned to relocate the beloved painting to his home in Perth.

The National Trust quickly stepped in, and now Young and Jacksons is the permanent home of Chloe.

Just as well. In 1988, Bondy made a move on another well-known Melbourne painting, and paid The Australian Club a then-record $1.25 million for its Rupert Bunny, titled Une Nuit de Canicule​.

Bondy flew Une Nuit de Canicule to London – in breach of the Movable Cultural Heritage Act of 1986, some suggest – where it it was destroyed in a warehouse fire.

A NOSE FOR CRIME

If you have been to a major music festival or event at any time in the past decade, you may have made acquaintance with an arm of the police force called the Passive Alert Detection (PAD) team.

They are the wranglers of the drug sniffer dogs that do such a fine job keeping these events clear of any illicit substances.

You will have seen them at The Big Day Out. At the Future Music Festival. At the Above and Beyond music event. At Soundwave. At the Listen Out Festival at the Botanic Garden.

They even went to something called the Groovin the Moo festival in Bendigo last week, and busted 27 people.

Indeed, the police sniffer dogs will be at any major event where one might expect to find lots of people, and lots of drugs.

Except the Logies.

We put in a request the week before last to Victoria Police to find out if any sniffer dogs would be at the Logies.

"There were no police PAD dogs present at the event," came the response. "I haven't been able to speak with the Drug Taskforce, but it would not meet their criteria."

Yes, because celebrities, parties and drugs never go together.

THE HECKLER

An interesting ad was taken out amid the UK election this week, stating "Conservative Case Studies Required" for one of Rupert Murdoch's British newspapers.

The Sun was splashing out £100 ($195) a head for readers "who are going to vote conservative and have a positive story to tell".

Lo and behold, just days later, The Currant Bun was filled with tales of people who had prospered under the Tories.

"I used to rent, and now I can buy my own family home," declared one, after pocketing another 100 quid towards the mortgage.
