New Ballarat Squash and Racquetball Centre manager Michael Golding said the centre had been “locked in” as host, but exact details of the tournament were still unknown.

“It’s an event of such standing that it means our sport (profile) is going to be significantly increased,” he said.

“It’s going to attract people from all over the country and it will be good for the community.”

Golding has just taken over the reins at the centre, and says an immediate focus will be put on raising the profile of squash and racquetball in Ballarat.

“I’ve been playing squash for 30 years (but) I’ve been in the job less than two weeks,” Golding said.

“The big aim or objective is to increase the profile of squash and racquetball.

“We want to really put a strong emphasis on more junior participation in our sport and get more people of all walks of life to know the benefits of the sport.”

The BSRC has 11 squash and racquetball courts – including a show court – a function

room, a gym for boot camp and health and fitness classes, and has recently employed a masseuse.

Golding estimates the membership sits around 160, but hopes to double that in time.

The centre will also host the Ballarat and District Squash Open from June 20-22, with participants from across Victoria expected to compete.

Pennant competitions are held daily throughout the school year, with senior divisions playing from Monday to Thursday, while juniors compete on Friday afternoons.

“We’re considering holding more activities over the school holidays,” Golding said.
