THE Courier has won a prestigious Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association award for its iPhone application.
The award was presented at a gala dinner in Sydney on Thursday night, where The Courier was also highly commended in the Newspaper of the Year category and the News Destination (website) categories.
Judges nominated The Courier's You Choose the News approach as a key to its success in the News Destination (mobile or app) category.
''The Courier demonstrated a well thought approach to its iPhone app,'' the judges said.
''The submission highlighted how the app is influencing the news cycle with users voting for the top story to feature in The Courier the next day.''
Since its launch, The Courier's free app has had more than 7200 downloads and topped the App Store list of free news applications in the week following its launch.
Editor Andrew Eales said recognition at the awards was a tribute to staff across the business.
''We have a team which is committed to meeting the challenges of the changing media environment by
providing the best local content and products,'' Mr Eales said.
''Recognition at PANPA is vote of confidence in our paper and our future direction.''
