The Reds went down 1-0 in a road game on Saturday, their first National Premier Leagues Victoria 1 loss for seven weeks.
Heading into the match with a more inexperienced lineup after the losses of Nelson Salvatore (transferred) and Shaun Romein (suspended), it did not take long for Ballarat to concede its first goal.
A defensive lapse allowed Munyaradzi Nyadzayo to find the back of the net after 15 minutes.
The scoreline remained at 1-0 for the rest of the first half, with the McDonalds Reds failing to create many genuine chances.
It was much of the same in the second half as Eastern Lions dominated much of the possession.
Ballarat worked its way into the game and despite a late surge, was unable to convert.
