A sinkhole has been discovered underneath a suburban street in Melbourne, reportedly forcing construction work in the area to be temporarily abandoned.

On Tuesday evening a VicRoads spokesman said the hole at Springvale Road in Donvale was estimated to be about "half a metre, by half a metre".
He said emergency services, including Victoria Police, were on the scene to investigate any potential problems with gas and water lines.
Donvale resident, Paul Hourmouzis, was one of the onlookers at the sink hole.
He said he was told by workers that the hole was discovered by someone operating digging machinery, who was "lucky not to fall in".
Road improvement works had been taking place at the site.
Mr Hourmouzis said the hole was about three-metres deep and ran underneath the road.
The north bound lane of Springvale Road near Serpells Terrace remains closed until further notice.
