A four-wheel-drive hit the Bell Street water main near Melville Road in Pascoe Vale South about 7.30am.
The impact sent water surging metres into the air.
Meanwhile, workers were repairing a three-metre-deep sinkhole, which opened up on busy Springvale Road in Donvale on Tuesday night.
The sinkhole was discovered by construction workers about 6.15pm.
The northbound lane of Springvale Road, near Serpells Terrace, remained closed to traffic on Wednesday morning, causing delays for peak-hour commuters.
The hole was about half a metre in diametre and extremely close to a high pressure gas main, a VicRoads spokesman said.
It also extended underneath a section of the road.
The area was declared safe by firefighters and VicRoads inspectors on Tuesday night, before repairs began.
"It should be filled up and ready to go by lunchtime, or mid-afternoon," the spokesman said.
"[The road] should be ready and open for afternoon peak hour."
Traffic is being directed along the southbound lane of Springvale Road, where the speed limit has been reduced to 40km/h.
Donvale resident Paul Hourmouzis said he was told the hole was discovered by a worker operating digging machinery, who was "lucky not to fall in".
Road improvement works have been taking place at the site.
